I tend to buy older, used gear for the homelab infrastructure – network switches, enterprise servers and mini desktops. With one exception, GPU machines have been custom built workstations. They are normally powered off unless in use whereas the infrastructure is expected to run 24/7. I mention this because it provides some insight into how I think about the equipment in my homelab.
